Social Media - Give The Gift of YouYesterday, one of my legal marketing colleagues, Kevin O’Keefe, owner of LexBlog, wrote about Sree Sreenivasan, pronounced “sree sree-knee-VAH-sun,” a Professor at Columbia University, who is also the school’s first Chief Digital Officer.

Sree conducted a three-hour live (yes, live, I know…gasp!) advanced workshop for journalists, bloggers and media professionals in Seattle last week. Kevin and several of his LexBlog team members attended.

Kevin wrote that he learned a great deal about the attributes necessary for effective Social Networking from Professor Sree.

Professor Sree suggested the following characteristics:

  • Helpful
  • Useful
  • Timely
  • Informative
  • Relevant
  • Practical
  • Actionable
  • Generous
  • Credible
  • Brief
  • Entertaining
  • Fun
  • Occasionally funny

As Kevin said:

“I see no reason these attributes cannot be included in your contributions as a lawyer.”

My comment on Kevin’s post was:

“Amen!  Around here, when we see someone who is self-absorbed, or does something that appears to be all about him/her, we teasingly draw an imaginary ring above our head (picture a halo), and we mouth ‘It’s all about me.'”

I continued:

“That’s exactly what Social Networking and Social Marketing are not. They are a little bit about you, and A LOT about everyone else, and how you can help them by displaying the attributes mentioned above.”

As I like to share with my clients:

“Absolutely anyone, anywhere at any time can be a talking head on Social Media. That takes no skill or talent. But to be able to truly engage another person…now that is what will make you stand out among the rest.”

I see these attributes as gifts you can give others. When others embody these characteristics, they have given us the gift of themselves. We like that. We like them, and we want more of them.

  1. You’re so right, Nancy…people instinctively know when someone is too arrogant in social circles. While they may not know it, others can pick those qualities out immediately.

    The best tip I can share here is not to get too big for the britches and remember your roots.

    Everyone of us began from ground zero. While others grew faster than some and have marked oodles of success, what we shouldn’t do is compare our progress to that guy up ahead. No one benefits.

    Jayme, you are right. Your comment about everyone starting from ground zero is not to be taken lightly. Not one of us knew what we were doing when we started in Social Media, but we learned through observation, trial and error. I love the advice to “not get too big for the britches.” Thanks for being here!
