Thanks Jeff! You nailed it....even when clients need to be told something they don't want to hear, it's important for us to be strong enough to tell them, even though it's not pleasant. They don't want surprises. Thanks for adding your perspective. It is always appreciated!

Thanks Jaimie! I agree about it being all about the client. I should have said that being known, liked and trusted is only a minor focus compared to making sure our clients feel that way. You are right that clients care about being taken care of...thanks for taking the time to share!

Nancy,

Great job as usual. Any client relationship has to be based on an open communication that travels both ways.

Most importantly the relationship with a client has to be built on sharing information that might not always be what your client wants to hear but will help their business. Do what you believe in and what you know will help your client's business.

Nancy:

Great post. However, I must disagree with one teensy little part.....

You wrote: "It’s not always just about us. It really is all about them, and a little bit about us, isn’t it?" and unfortunately I must disagree with this statement because in all honestly it is ALL about them and NOTHING about us.

People do not care about "you" they only care about themselves and that there needs and interests are being met. If they have hired you, it is because THEY think you can do the job. THEY want to know that care about THEM. So my suggestion to my clients (the attorneys) is to stop thinking about themselves and only think about what their clients want, need or desire. (Okay, I now it's just a bit nit-picky :) )

And yes, letting your clients know that you do care about THEM is incredibly important and will go a long way to keeping that client happy.

All my best,
